We started with a few strategic communications announcing some exciting consumer industry executive moves the team helped facilitate. We also wanted to engage a new generation of talent by announcing Ann MacCarthy as the firm’s new managing partner. Throughout our discussions, there was a real sense of urgency to do more. So we developed a prioritized list of initiatives that would build on the brand’s historical integrity in the marketplace, while engaging with a contemporary new audience. I’m most proud of this project, plus it was great fun from start to finish. What began with the need for some marketing support – making updates to the current website, creating online surveys, updating email lists – evolved into a whole new identity for the vibrant Chicago neighborhood known as Clark Street in Lincoln Park. The Lincoln Park Chamber – along with a Clark Street Commission – realized the importance of a unique and lively identity supported by email communications, website, and social media in attracting new businesses and visitors to the area. Constance came to me as a referral on a project that went through several scope changes as we talked. Initially she wanted to convert a whitepaper she was writing into an e-book for publication on her website. But once we began reviewing the material together, we agreed that the reader would benefit from a reorganization of the concepts and some visual models. And there began a complete redesign. Eventually the e-book was online, and the design was turned into a printed pamphlet for wider distribution. According to Constance, the ideas presented in the publication are now standard operating procedure in several of her client companies.

And so it was when my communications + writing partner Eric Sodorff came to me about a client who had engaged him to create a modest ‘starter’ website for his fledgling consulting company. Having worked with Eric at Heidrick & Struggles, we were not only familiar with each others’ work styles and strengths, but with how a project like this should flow. Eric worked directly with the client to establish the vision for the site and to develop the content, while I developed a new logo and built the website. The client was thrilled with the entire process and the end result.

With Cook Associates’ 50th anniversary quickly approaching, the vice president of marketing had a short window in which to showcase the milestone on the company website. Like many of us when we have an urgent need and a low budget, she called on a few trusted colleagues to pull something together. In less than 4 weeks, we built a dynamic commemorative micro-site that pays homage to the firm’s history and significance in their industry, while demonstrating a clear vision for a vibrant future. It even included a guestbook where clients and friends could leave congratulatory messages for all to enjoy.
