Clark Street in Lincoln Park

the organization

Founded in 1947, the Lincoln Park Chamber of Commerce (LPCC) has grown into Chicago’s largest neighborhood chamber. They lead numerous initiatives in support of their mission to help businesses in Lincoln Park succeed and grow. The LPCC is also the service provider for the Clark Street Special Service Area (SSA), coordinating SSA services and programs, reporting to the Chicago Department of Housing and Economic Development, the SSA Commission, local aldermen and the community. SSAs, known as Business or Community Improvement Districts in other cities, provide a fair and transparent means to finance and manage improvement programs important to communities. This SSA program provides the Clark Street in Lincoln Park (CSLP) community with the financial means to create, maintain and manage clean, attractive and competitive commercial districts. CSLP is located right next to Chicago’s lakefront and just two miles from downtown.

the need

Together we set out to build a community identity for Clark Street capitalizing on the many assets of the area. In order to accomplish this we needed a strategic marketing and communications plan that would enhance Clark Street’s reputation as a great place to shop, dine, visit and live. We set out to develop an integrated communications plan including logo development, social media, a new website and communications strategy. In addition, we needed a style guide and a system for documenting communications processes.

the tactics

Artisan Etc…

  • advised on how to approach a marketing + communications strategy including identifying vendors to create the various components: overall strategy, identity refresh, website, approach to social media, email marketing strategy, branded materials, etc.
  • created RFPs and directed the service provider selection process for the components the SSA wanted to outsource: marketing + communications strategy, creative designer, website developer, social media expert
  • engaged Orbit Media Studios for the website development, including a dynamic business directory and calendar of events, utilizing their proprietary content management tool, Mighty-Site
  • served as project manager for all service provider relationships: acting as liaison with LPCC staff, directing each service provider towards the highest quality deliverables, maintaining timeline and budgetary margins, and providing project reports for the CSLP program manager, the LPCC president and the SSA Commission
  • created strategy + planning documents to serve as reference and to guide the development of individual marketing + communications tactics and processes for each component of the integrated strategy
  • trained and directed LPCC staff on specific website, social media, and email marketing tactics
  • created + organized process documentation, style guides, and an asset library to provide greater efficiency in the development of future marketing initiatives
  • continues to document additional processes, devise new tactical plans, and generally support the LPCC staff in their ongoing marketing + communications efforts

the result

Through the partnership of Artisan Etc and the Clark Street in Lincoln Park team, we launched a new website, and developed and implemented social media, email, and promotional campaigns. Through these communication platforms, we’ve created an avenue for merchants, residents and visitors to feel connected to Clark Street and have formed the foundation for a new CSLP community identity.
